The concept of factor and motive is distinguished and their definition is proposed in the article. The factor analysis of Ukraine's migration growth rate for 2016 is carried out. The construction of the regression model showed that the most significant positive effect on the growth of the value of the coefficient of migration is the improvement of employment opportunities. The motives of external migration of the population of Ukraine were identified with the help of the expert study of labor migrants and the sociological monitoring survey of the unemployed population of Lviv region (2013-2016 years). The results showed that the main reasons for the outflow of Ukrainians abroad are low wages and the lack of suitable work. On this basis, it was concluded that reformation of the wage system in the direction of raising its level, as well as improving the employment opportunities on the national labor market, could slow down the paces of working-age population leaving abroad.
